Free Science Curriculum for K-12 and College

At My Science Box, you will find science curriculum in many areas of science for grades k-12 and also for college students.  My Science box has "complete, scaffolded lesson plans to teach a 4-6 week science unit through activities, projects, and field trips."  The curriculum includes full lesson plans including graphics and experiments.

This Friday: Go on a Free Electronic Field Trip to Sagauro National Park

The National Park Foundation and National Geographic want to invite you to go on an electronic field trip especially for 4th-8th graders this Friday, October 21st at 1pm EST or 4pm EST. Registration is now open.

From their description:

We’ll be visiting this iconic national park to learn more about the Sonoran Desert and its exceptional desert biodiversity. We will focus on the most unique and important species living in this desert, which is visually defined by the Saguaro cactus. These cacti can live to 100 years of age and grow 45 feet tall!

On this exciting journey, we will also follow thousands of students doing hands-on science in the park as part of the BioBlitz program led by the National Park Service and National Geographic.

To prepare you for the trip, the National Park Foundation created a beautiful website full of lesson plans, games, and more to help teach children about the Saguaro National Park.

Free Math & Science Educational Videos from Scholastic (Elementary - Middle School)

I just watched a video on volcanoes and in those few minutes, learned more than I knew about them.  Scholastic has created a site called StudyJams!, full of over 200 short, upbeat educational videos on math & science topics. 

The videos are organized by topic, so you can just find the video that matches the educational concept you're covering in class!  You may print out the lyrics to sing along to songs (I sang - poorly - a song on parallel lines and intersecting lines) and you may test yourself on a variety of topics.

Free 36-Week Life Science Curriculum for Elementary Students

One of our readers suggested that we highlight this free life science curriculum created for elementary studnents (especially homeschoolers, ages 6-9).  It looks like a good one!

The following text is from the E=MC2 website:

 "Classic Science:  Elementary Life Science: is a 36-week curriculum for children of ages 6-9. Each week contains one day of reading and writing and two days of hands-on curriculum. As a parent, you receive monthly tests for your child, review questions and a manual for teaching your child how to run experiments at home! Your child will master all of the life science content set forth by the National Science Education Standards in one year."

Free Interactive Periodic Table of the Elements with Videos

Since our Friendly Chemistry giveaway has so many entries already, I'm assuming that many of us would like some help teaching chemistry!  Here is a free find to help:

If your students had an Einstein-look-alike with a British accent teaching chemistry, do you think they'd listen more attentively?

If so, you're in luck.  He, along with other scientists from the University of Nottingham, have created the Periodic Table of Videos.  

Lisa, a Freely Educate reader, suggested this site to you.  She says, "There is a fun and instructional video for each element and many will have a cool experiment to show the properties of the element discussed."

Free Flight on the Young Eagles 'Learn to Fly Day' on May 21st (US, Canada)

On May 21st, the Young Eagles program welcomes your family to a free flight at a local airport for International Learn to Fly Day.  Why would they do that?  Here's their reason: "International Learn to Fly Day was announced in 2009 as an effort to increase interest in flying and to encourage the aviation community to get others involved in Aviation."  Over 1.6 million Young Eagles have flown since!  There are a lot of freebies with this one; see below. 

Last year, our family discovered the Young Eagles program, where all four of our children were taken up in a Cessna airplane over the farm fields and the bay area where we live.   They went in search of our house while the children learned about flying from the pilot, a gentleman who has been flying for many years.  The experience was free and absolutely priceless. The experience sparked an interest in our then-12yo daughter who hopes to become a pilot (upon hearing that, our pilot said, "That's why we do this!").

On May 21st, for International Learn to Fly Day, the Young Eagles program will again be taking off all across America and Canada. Your family can fly for free!  The children are first introduced to the airplane as they help the pilot check it before take-off.  They then buckle in and fly for about 15-20 minutes.  After they land safely, the children are giving a logbook to take home.  

The students are also given a free EAA membership, which includes an online magazine and free access to over 300 science and technology museums.  

The students are also given free access to an online aviation course.  Here's the description:

EAA and Sporty’s Pilot Shop have teamed up to offer Sporty’s Complete Flight Training Course – a $215 value - offered for free! 

This online course is designed to take you all the way through the process of passing the FAA written exams (required tests to earn your private pilot certificate) and more. 

Then, your child between the ages of 13-19 who has completed Part I (recreational aviation) of the free online aviation course above, will qualify to take a free introductory flight lesson - a real flight lesson - that normally costs about $120.  

If your child is still interested in flying, he or she may then submit an application for a full or partial scholarship to continue private pilot lessons.   Over $300,000 in funds are set aside for those students over 14 years old who have completed the entire online aviation course.

How to Get this Freebie:  Yes, free!  We didn't pay a single penny for the experience.  Visit Learn to Fly for more information including a list of participating locations.  Note:  My location is not listed, so yours may not be as well.  I found out about ours through the local newspaper.  Only about a dozen children showed up!   They had 6 pilots and 6 airplanes ready and waiting.
