How to Keep the Kids Busy This Summer

If your kids are like mine, they are not averse to rotting their brains in front of the TV, Wii and XBox all Summer.  (Imagine those things being at all interesting to kids!)  This morning, I created a chart for  the kids.  I told them they need to spend 30 minutes doing each of these today:

• Something educational on the computer
• Something that makes you move
• Something that you can make or do (a project)
• Something that you can write or read

"Something educational on the computer" included any of the highlighted sites from here, Freely Educate.  Tomorrow, I'll add Activity TV to the list of allowed sites.  I think this one will keep them interested longer than 30 minutes (yay!).

Activity TV is a digital cable program that also offers its videos online, at ActivityTV.com.  The available projects range from origami to juggling, so you'll have to check this one out to see all there is to offer!  I know our 4 kids (14, 12, 10, 7) will enjoy this one!

Physical Education: Free Full Workouts and Tracking at Marine Corps Fitness

A former marine created Marine Style Fitness, a site that offers workouts and training for physical education.  It's not created for children, and it has a few "premium" workouts on the site, but after registering (free) and looking through the site, I think it definitely has enough value to highlight the site here on Freely Educate.

Free Resources for Teachers, Including Standards-Correlated Lessons for K-12

The quality of free educational finds seems to be improving each year.  Today's freebie is definitely one of those high quality resources. 

SMART Exchange offers free downloadable lessons* and lesson plans for teachers (including homeschoolers).  There is a teacher forum on the site, where you can bounce ideas off other teachers.  You may upload content you'd like to share. And, best of all, there is a search feature built into the site where you can find lessons specific to your state's standards and specific to the grade(s) you are teaching.

The free resources are available in a dozen or so subjects, ranging from Citizenship to Math, and from English as a Second Language to Special Education.  Here is a screenshot of the most downloaded subjects (as of March 18, 2010):

Originally published in 1910, this book gives the most comprehensive explanation of Swedish Drill that we've found. Charlotte Mason used Swedish Drill exercises as part of her physical education program for her students.

This 88-page how-to manual will walk you through the various positions and movements, with diagrams and photographs to help.
