Teaching Practical Skills? Here's a FREE Quilting Course!

In our little homeschool, learning practical skills is just as important as learning academics.  Your children - and you! - can learn quilting at the new site, Craftsy.  This quilting course is 100% free and ongoing throughout the year.  It is taught by expert quilter, Amy Gibson, through video tutorials. 

Students are able to view the tutorials at any time (they are about 30 minutes long) and as often as they like.  Students are able to interact with other students and ask the instructor questions. At the end of the course,  you will have created a full size, unique quilt!

Free Science Curriculum for K-12 and College

At My Science Box, you will find science curriculum in many areas of science for grades k-12 and also for college students.  My Science box has "complete, scaffolded lesson plans to teach a 4-6 week science unit through activities, projects, and field trips."  The curriculum includes full lesson plans including graphics and experiments.

This Friday: Go on a Free Electronic Field Trip to Sagauro National Park

The National Park Foundation and National Geographic want to invite you to go on an electronic field trip especially for 4th-8th graders this Friday, October 21st at 1pm EST or 4pm EST. Registration is now open.

From their description:

We’ll be visiting this iconic national park to learn more about the Sonoran Desert and its exceptional desert biodiversity. We will focus on the most unique and important species living in this desert, which is visually defined by the Saguaro cactus. These cacti can live to 100 years of age and grow 45 feet tall!

On this exciting journey, we will also follow thousands of students doing hands-on science in the park as part of the BioBlitz program led by the National Park Service and National Geographic.

Free Current Events Lesson Plans & More at this New C-SPAN Site

This week, C-SPAN published a new website called Classroom Deliberations.  This, from their press release: 

C-SPAN Classroom is delighted to announce the launch of "Deliberations", a website designed to engage students in classroom deliberations about current issues being debated in Congress.

On the website you will find a carefully selected set of C-SPAN video clips, along with newspaper articles that concisely present the leading positions on new issues. Teachers will find handouts, lesson plans, and deliberation strategies that make it easy to engage students on the issues.

New events will be added regularly; right now, there are two:  Unemployment and the proposed Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution.
