iTunes U is Now on the iPhone, iPod Touch, & iPad for FREE!

Ten years ago, who would have thought you could take university courses on a flat "picture frame?"   Apple just launched an iTunes U app for the iPod Touch, iPad, and iPhone.  The number and quality of college courses available - for free -in the iTunes U app is astonishing!  You won't receive a diploma, but you'll have the knowledge. 

These free iTunes U courses can easily be added to your homeschool curriculum.  You'll find courses in science, math, and...well, with over 500,000 lectures, courses, books, and videos, you'll be able to find all you need to keep your homeschooling high school happy studious.  In the app, you can build a course, and your student can switch between devices - from iPad to iPhone, for example - while studying.   This is just the beginning of what we'll see in modern education - I'm so excited that so much knowledge is out there for free!

Free Courses from M.I.T. (college level!)

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (the famous M.I.T.) offers over 2,000 of their courses online, for free.  Through this program, you may read through the syllabus, course materials, lecture notes, assignments, exams, videos, and more, as if you are taking a course straight from MIT (you won't get college credit or a diploma; they are offering the knowledge only).

Free Educational Videos on Economics, History, Civics, Test Prep, Sciences (and Math!)

We've mentioned the Khan Academy math program a few times over the years (program, yes, it's not just videos!), but did you know there are also educational videos on the sciences (physics, chemistry, biology and more), economics, history, civics, and test prep. Free Computer Programming Curriculum for Middle - High School

Alice, a computer programming software from Carnegie Mellon University, is an exciting educational find for middle schoolers, high schoolers, and college age students.  

Carnegie Mellon can certainly explain the program better than me. The following is from the Alice.org site:

Alice is an innovative 3D programming environment that makes it easy to create an animation for telling a story, playing an interactive game, or a video to share on the web. It allows students to learn fundamental programming concepts in the context of creating animated movies and simple video games.

How to Get This Freebie ~ Alice comes in two different programs:

• The main program, Alice, was created for high schoolers and college age students by Carnegie Mellon University.

From Johns Hopkins: Free College Level Health Courses

Johns Hopkins University is another university that believes knowledge should be free.  They write, "Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health's (JHSPH) goals are to provide free, searchable, access to JHSPH's course materials for educators, students, and self-learners around the world. "   This is great news for us! 

The courses contain everything you would need to complete these college-level courses:

• syllabus
• schedule
• lecture materials
• readings
• materials list (if additional texts are needed)

More information about the courses:

• JHSPH does not require that participants register
• JHSPH does not grant degrees or certificates for these courses
• The courses do not provide access to JHSPH faculty

Free Interactive Periodic Table of the Elements with Videos

Since our Friendly Chemistry giveaway has so many entries already, I'm assuming that many of us would like some help teaching chemistry!  Here is a free find to help:

If your students had an Einstein-look-alike with a British accent teaching chemistry, do you think they'd listen more attentively?

If so, you're in luck.  He, along with other scientists from the University of Nottingham, have created the Periodic Table of Videos.
