I'm really excited that I found this site --- CodeAcademy teaches computer programming for free and, through Code Year, they're offering the information simply and slowly over the course of 2012. The goal of Code Year is to teach you how to code within one year. Your student can learn how to program computers, create websites, and create apps.
There are no dry videos or lectures or textbooks. You'll learn code through interactive lessons. The first lesson has you work on coding a simple computer game.
A friend of mine owns a social media business, and he says programmers are in demand! I don't know what our 16yo son is going to do after high school, but this is a skill he may as well have under his belt, so I'm going to have him work through Code Year.
Visit Code Year to learn computer programming for free in 2012. There are nine courses already on Code Year, but you can easily catch up as those courses are still available.

Interesting tidbit: The mayor of NYC is one of the half million users who signed up to learn code this year!
