Free Historical Paper Structures to Cut Out and Assemble

 

PaperToys.com offers paper structures (to cut out and assemble) of several world landmarks.   These structures may be used alongside your history program.

Free Ocean Studies Curriculum from NOAA

Even if you live far from the ocean, your classroom can enjoy a deep study of it through NOAA's Ocean Explorer program.  They offer the following (click on the links to see the section of interest - the text below is from the NOAA site): 

Lesson Plans
Hands-on and standards-based lesson plans have been developed that bring entire classrooms "on board" for exploration and discovery. Using new technological "eyes" to see, sense, measure, image, and describe a little known ocean world, scientists and educators are bringing the excitement of late-breaking ocean discoveries into classrooms through the over 300 lesson plans presented here.

Expedition Education Modules
Expedition Education Modules are designed as an education unit to share the excitement of daily at-sea discoveries and the science behind NOAA’s major ocean exploration expedition. Each module contains an Expedition Purpose, Lessons, Multimedia Learning Objects, OceanAGE Career Connections, and Other Resources and Links.

Multimedia Discovery Missions
The Multimedia Discovery Missions are a series of 15 interactive multimedia presentations and learning activities that address topics ranging from Chemosynthesis, and Hydrothermal Vent Life, and Deep-sea Benthos to Food, Water and Medicine from the Sea.

Curriculum
Learning Ocean Science through Ocean Exploration is an updated curriculum for teachers of Grades 6-12 that takes lesson plans that were developed for NOAA ocean explorations and the Ocean Explorer Web Site and presents them in a comprehensive scope and sequence through subject area categories that cut across individual expeditions. Each lesson focuses on an inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning and is correlated to the National Science Education Standards.

Kindle Books for free for Students, Teachers, Homeschoolers

Since the Kindle is still Amazon's bestselling item, I thought I'd write a post of free educational books you can download onto the new Kindle, whether you're the one receiving one or giving one.  

Don't have a Kindle?  No problem!  You can read Kindle books on your iPad (lucky you), iPhone, or even right on your computer screen. 

I've had my Kindle (pictured above) for two years now.  I justified the expense (at the time, $349; now it sells for just $259) because of all the free books I could put on the Kindle and would no longer have to buy.  There are a few other reasons* I think the purchase price was worth it, but first, here are some links to free Kindle content:

 from Jane Austen to Mark Twain to Greek books, FreeKindleBooks.org  has links to thousands of free Kindle-format-ready books...

Project Gutenberg, a frequently used site for any literature lover, has over 30,000 books ready to use on the Kindle...
  

 
There are over 25,000 free books at ManyBooks.net...

 

 

There are alsofree books available straight from Amazon, new and old.  Often, free books are offered as special limited time offers (note:  the titles are not all suitable for children).  Many classics are free straight from Amazon. 

There are many, many other sites to list.  If enough of you are interested, I may start a Kindle category.  I think the Kindle - and devices based on it - may be in the near future for most students.  Imagine not carrying those heavy textbooks across campus!

* A few of those other reasons I justified buying my Kindle, even at the higher price it was then:

• It can hold thousands of books and magazines (even more with a memory card added to it) so I only have to carry one thing
• Amazon saves every single thing - even the notes I write in the books -  so I don't have to worry about losing my Kindle content
• The web browser.  It is in black & white and the browsing is not the fastest thing, but I use the web browser often  to check the news or my email and I like having it for emergencies.  One time we were lost in the shady side of a new-to-us city and I used my Kindle to view an online map to find out way out.  Whew.
• There are no monthly fees at all.  I mostly download free content.  So, since my Kindle is two years old, it is a real bargain at $349* divided by 24 months of usage (and counting!).  It's much cheaper than my cell phone is! (*the Kindle is now $259)

Free Math, Science, Reading Learning Games for Elementary Grades
